Fun Monday - "What Do We Have To Eat?"

Hi Fun Monday friends,

One of our regular participants, Gawilli of Back in the Day, decided not to enter this week's survey of refrigerators. However, she did write a hilarious post about not participating. Go on over to Back in the Day, and read the post Refrigerator Rights. This is worth your time.

Is a question frequently heard by the parents of teenage boys. This is also what Amy W. of A Family Story is asking this week's Fun Monday participants. Amy wants to see the inside of our refrigerators. Easy enough , right? Not so quick, sweet Amy has instructed us not to clean before taking the pictures. I thought of a way to cheat and not cheat at the same time. Since the fridge needs cleaned, I figured that I could take a before picture and then take pictures as I cleaned the refrigerator. That cleaning impulse passed quickly. So here is my NOT so clean icebox.

Refrigerator magnets adorn both the front and side of the appliance. Most of the magnets hold postcards. We do have one piece of artwork by our lovely granddaughter, who is two.

Inside the freezer, you will see a big box of frozen soft pretzels, frozen chicken breasts, frozen fudge, ice, and a few more items. If you look closely, there are black styrofoam cups that are decorated with pumpkins. I use those cups to hold hot grease. After the grease is frozen, it is easier to dispose of as a solid than as liquid.

On the bottom shelf inside the fridge, you will find some of our beverages, yogurt, and applesauce. The middle shelf holds bread and eggs. Behind the bread, there are some things that need to be thrown out. There is cheese in the meat keeper. Strangely, I hardly ever place any meat in the meat keeper. The top shelf has several things including a bowl of nectarines, some condiments, and some more things to toss out including part of a very large zucchini.
Finally, inside the door, you will find more beverages including wine and several cans of some immunity drink among those plastic bags at the bottom. While writing this, I realize that the fridge really does need cleaned so off I go to clean the refrigerator. Yours is probably already clean so you might like to check out how the other participants keep their food cold. After you are finished, stop by for some pie. We will have coffee and some frozen ready-to-serve (Just Thaw) Banana Creme Pie

As a historical note: Two of the first home refrigerators both appeared in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where, in 1911, General Electric company unveiled a unit invented by a French monk. In 1915 the first "Guardian" refrigerator - a predecessor of the Frigidaire - was assembled in a wash house in a Fort Wayne backyard. Fort Wayne is my home town.

Man I'd kill for a nice hot pretzel right about now, we can't get them over here.

I don't think your fridge needs to be cleaned at all, in fact I think it looks a little too clean!

Is that raisin bread I see in there? If so, would you send me a couple of buttered, toasted pieces?

I agree, it does not look messy at all.

What is the big thing with apple sauce? The only time I have ever seen it served here is with roast pork. What on earth do you guys eat it with? Almost every blogger from the US seems to eat bucket loads of the stuff and I am just wondering with what. (Me, I think apples are a pie filling and do not belong on a main meal.)

Didn't look like it needed to be cleaned to me either...I don't know what your talking about.

Have a great Monday!

Those Hot Pretzles look really delicious.

What messy fridge? I don't see a mess.

Happy Monday!

What a good idea for disposing of fat. I must give it a try. Thanks for the bit of history, imagine life without a fridge. I think I was about 9 yrs old when my mother had her first fridge.

That's a well stocked fridge and pretty clean as well.

clean enough! and I'd be happy to organize if you're within 5 miles of Cedar Rapids! Ha! Umm. yeah so basically I did "baking" on the top shelf, miscelleanous and packets of stuff on the middle one, and veggies on the left, fruits on the right, no big deal! Can't wait til you see my fridge, going over to post right now!

I lived about an hour from Fort Wayne my 8th and 9th grade years. Rome City, Indiana.

I forgot to list the bacon grease in my freezer contents. It's in a Cool Whip container. I save it to fry eggs in. Mmmm, mmmm! Nothing like eggs fried in bacon grease and some grits on the side!

Can you make me a pretzel MJD, and can I have either a glass of coke or a couple of glasses of wine to wash it down with?

I don't keep meat in my meat drawer either. I use it for various cheeses as well.

Hmmm... I wonder if that freezing thing would work on used frying oil... I sometimes discover pans of used oil in my cabinets (thanks, Darling Man).

Hey what do you mean - it looks pretty clean to me. Applesauce is good to use in place of the fat in baking. By the way, thanks for visiting my site!

Your fridge is so much cleaner than mine!

Love the little "fridge history" note.

Those pretzels in the freezer look yummy. It's been a long time since I've had those!

My four-year-old happened to be looking over my shoulder and saw the pretzel box. She said "Pretzels! Hey, let's go buy some!" Thanks, mjd. LOL

That frig produces a lot of good meals. I only wish it had a milk source that would not run out. You know, like those cold water taps.

Thanks for the historical note!!

If you call your fridge messy I can only imagine what you'd say about mine. Things stuffed in here and there, all higgledy-piggledy—yikes! I'd have the refrigerator police on my doorstep if I posted pics.

Yours is so ... well ... organized and neat. I'm in awe.

I'll get around to doing the meme hopefully tomorrow!

I remember the answer to the question posed in the headline was almost always "Good food." No matter what we were having.

Well, if that's a mess...

MMMmmm I've never seen frozen pretzels before. I could go for a pretzel right now. Good idea with the grease. I might have to start doing that. Right now I use a bowl, then transfer to a plastic bag when cooled...such a pain!

I adore pretzels with cheese. That's what I get at gymnastics meets while my husband is eating 2 hot dogs! I am not brave enough to show my refrigerator, even though it is much cleaner than it used to be.

Because Norge is also one of the original Refrigerators, we often use that to describe revealing butt-crack.
However, now that I know the importance of your home town in the origin of refrigerator repairmen, perhaps I'll start saying

"Hey.. your Fort Wayne is showing."

Pamela said...

That didn't make sense.

We call butt crack a "norge"

Can I please take a raincheck on the pie?

You have a surprise waiting for you at my place.

Anonymous said...

Any chance I could have a pretzel?!?

Anonymous said...

Your frideg looks fairly clean to me...well stocked too :)

I think I have the same mustard as you, just several thousand miles further east.

Pam said...

I wonder why you keep nectarines in the fridge? Maybe it's an American thing - cold nectarines, like iced tea?

Looks a nice tidy fridge to me, anyway.

Brilliant post!
I feel as if I live in your fridge!! Haha!

I've never bought those pretzels before, but have thought about it....are they good?

Freezing the grease, how clever.

I guess this Fun Monday inspired all sorts of cleaning, because I cleaned mine out as well.

Thanks for stopping by my Fun Monday, and to answer your question, most condiments do have expiration dates, and I do throw others out when I realize "man, I've had this for a LONG time"...lol

Nessa said...

Is there so little alcohol in there because you drank it all?

I have those same pretzels i love thos things with hot cheese;) yum
